          The Evolution of Subcultures

                            Between Generations

VSCO girls, goths, cottagecore, dark academia…if you’ve
been on the internet for the last 10 years, you’ve seen
these titles before. Maybe you’ve seen it as a hashtag on
an Instagram post, or you’ve heard your kids using such

a term to describe their taste in fashion. That’s because
all the names mentioned in the beginning are subcul-
tures prominently found within Gen Zer’s.

However, taking one good look at these subcultures will
also make you realize how they have been passed down
       from generation to generation.

A good example to observe this happening would be Source: TheTrendSpotter
cottagecore. The soft colors and countryside aesthetic
are derived from both 19th century fashion and the
hippie movement in the 1960’s. The music often asso-

ciated with cottagecore is found in many genres, but
mainly soft rock and indie pop, which was also prominent
       in the 1960s and 1970s.

Personally, I find it beautiful to see how many different
subcultures stay strong in society by evolving along with
the times. The goth kids from the 1980s live on in the
e-girls and e-boys of today. The crowd of nerdy kids

that has been around for every single generation keeps
expanding with the amount of technological advance-
       ments since the year 2000.

Naturally, Gen Z doesn’t just take inspiration from others:
we’ve created many of our own subcultures. Kidcore, Source: Pinterest
which is based on wearing bright colors and nostalgia,
is a relatively new group that is constantly gaining more

and more popularity among young people.

Interestingly enough, many Gen Zer’s tend to combine
subcultures rather than sticking to just one. Even

though subcultures can have subcultures of their own,
many adolescents nowadays prefer to be unique in their
aesthetics, which is also pretty nice to observe.

In the end, I find it important to develop yourself as a
person in a way that you’ll be unique. I’ve taken a lot of
inspiration from many people I’ve encountered before:
       perhaps you can as well.
