STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: FEMALE

Lubricate catheter with water-soluble lubricant to
minimize urethral trauma.

Inform patient you are ready to catheterize and ask them
to take some deep breaths and/or bear down.

Gently insert lubricated catheter tip into meatus.

DO NOT TOUCH the surrounding areas with the catheter
or your sterile hand.

Advance the catheter until urine starts to flow.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: FEMALE

• Advance the catheter 1 - 3 inches (5cm) further into
the bladder to ensure that catheter tip is in the bladder
and not the urethra.

• Inflate balloon with indicated amount of sterile water (a
5 mL balloon will need 10 mL of sterile water to make
sure the balloon is symmetrical).

• If patient experiences pain with balloon inflation,
deflate immediately as catheter is still in the urethra.
Advance catheter further and attempt to inflate again.

• Gently tug the catheter until resistance is felt- this
ensures proper placement of catheter.
