 In some cases depending on past medical history male
patients may require Foleys to be placed by a urologist

 This can usually be seen in patients with prostate
problems

 Prophylactic antibiotics may be recommended for patients
with prosthetic heart valves, artificial urethral sphincters,
or penile implants.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: MALE

 Check MD order and explain procedure to patient.

 Perform hand hygiene and don non sterile gloves.

 Wash penis with soap and water & dry. If not
circumcised retract the foreskin and clean area
covered by foreskin

 Remove old catheter and discard in plastic trash bag
(see Indwelling Catheter Removal).

 Remove gloves, wash hands and obtain catheter
administration kit.
