STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: MALE

• Remove the waterproof absorbent under pad and
place under the buttocks extending forward
between the legs.

• If not using a pre-packaged "closed system," use
aseptic technique to:
• Drop the catheter into the sterile tray
• Attach drainage bag connector to the catheter.

• Using sterile technique, put on sterile gloves in
insertion kit and prepare to catheterize.

STEP BY STEP PROCEDURE: MALE

• Grasp penis using slight tension, elevating it towards abdomen to an
erect position (60°angle).

• This will straighten the urethra to facilitate passage of catheter through
the prostate and into bladder.

• Using cotton balls soaked with antimicrobial solution, swab in outward
circles from meatus to beginning of retracted foreskin.

• Do this 3 times using a different solution-soaked cotton ball.
