Language Focus: Making Strong Arguments with Evidence, Causal Phrases, and
Rebuttals
1. To make a strong argument, relevant evidence is needed. Here are some expressions used to state
evidence.
Expressions Examples
One reason is that... “One reason is that you can get discounts up to
50%.”
For example, “For example, I bought my laptop online in 5
minutes.”
According to the “According to the video, plastic products pollute
video/text, ... the environment.”
The proof is in the pudding. “The proof is in the pudding—jobs are created
when people can find work.”
Let the facts speak for “Let the facts speak for themselves: addiction is
themselves. a serious issue that affects millions of lives.”
The numbers don’t lie. “The numbers don’t lie—more and more land is
being destroyed to make way for industry.”
2. Causal Phrases are used to explain why evidence supports the argument.
Expressions Examples
Because... / Since... “Because it’s more convenient, more people shop online.”
As a result... “As a result, nature and communities are at risk.”
Due to the fact that... “Due to the fact that it’s popular, many people assume that
the skincare product is effective for dry skin.”
That’s why... “Life is getting more expensive—that’s why people
demand more job openings.”
Thanks to... “Thanks to QRIS, people can now pay easily with one QR
code.”
This leads to... “Forest destruction leads to loss of homes for animals
and makes the earth warmer.”
