READING: Wish and List
A. Identifying topic. Read this passage and find the topic that follows each passage.
In order to understand what you are reading, you need to be sure that you know
what you are reading about. That is, you need to know the topic -a general word
that includes all the other words.
To find the topic of a paragraph, ask yourself:
What is the one idea that the author is discussing throughout the paragraph?
What is the one word* that relates all the discussion of the paragraph?
Example:
Shane is going to visit Sri Lanka for his summer vacation. He wants to go to Sri Lanka
because he never goes to Sri Lanka before. He only has short time for his vacation. So, he
tries to plan his travel carefully. He is reading a brochure about Sri Lanka while he is
planning his trip. He has decided that he will only visit the beaches.
The passage shows that its sentences have the same topic. We know it from the key words;
they are visit, Sri Lanka, vacation, travel, brochure, plan, trip, and beaches. They share the
same topic about a trip to Sri Lanka’s beaches.
*writer often repeats key words or use related words to discuss and emphasize main point
(could be kinds, examples, or parts of something).

might do there. This time he wants warm
weather, sun and sky. Based on the brochure, Sri
Lanka offers many fascinating beaches. Then he
decides that he will only visit the beaches.
