7 Reading: The Challenges of a Professional Chef

A. Skimming for general information. Read the following paragraphs and find the topic of each
paragraph.

Skimming is a high-speed reading to help the readers saving the time. Different from
scanning, skimming is useful to get the general idea or sense of a passageincluding finding the
topic of each paragraph or passage, not specific details. Topic is a general idea covering what
it is the readers are reading about. In addition, topic is usually a noun or a noun phrase, not a
sentence.

The followings are the examples of general question about the whole text.

 Is this passage useful for students?
 What is the writer’s purpose?
 What is the topic of the paragraph?

Example:
There are many kinds of jobs that you can choose such as architect, pilot, police officer, fashion
designer, and many others. You may choose one based on your interest, talents, and or personalities.
Each job may have different qualifications and different problems related to the job descriptions and
tasks it has.

1. One of the reasons why people love soccer is because of the players. There are soccer players who
are really famous because they are good looking. They become commercial stars and even star
movies. The fans, mostly women, adore them very much.

2. Being a pilot may become a dream job for people.Mostly, people want to be a pilot because of its
high salary. Beside the salary, pilots also have chances to travel around the world. They can visit
many different places and countries.

3. Today, there are people called as the entrepreneurs. Who are they? They are people who want to
have their own business. An entrepreneur runs his own business. Though it seems that he can have
flexible work hour, an entrepreneur has a bigger challenge to handle. He has to be skillful in
managing the business and able to solve any kinds of problems in it.

4. There are many ways to succeed. One of them is to love your job. Many intelligent people have
good and promising jobs. However, they fail to perform their jobs well. There must be some reasons
for this. As some researches find, one of the reasons is because they don’t really love their jobs. It
makes them not to do the best efforts and performances. Therefore, intelligence is not the only thing
to be successful in your job. You need to love what you do. That is the matter.
