Language Focus: Understanding Key Elements of a Well-Written Paragraph
Key Elements of a Well-Written Paragraph
A paragraph is a unit of writing that expresses a single main idea or topic. It consists of three
essential components:
1. Topic Sentence:
• The topic sentence introduces the main idea or topic of the paragraph.
• It provides a clear focus for the reader and sets the direction for the rest of the
paragraph.
• Example: “The company's recent marketing campaign has significantly increased
brand visibility and customer engagement.”
2. Supporting Details:
• Supporting details provide evidence, examples, or explanations that support
and develop the main idea presented in the topic sentence.
• They help to clarify and illustrate the main point of the paragraph.
• Example: “Statistics show a 20% increase in website traffic since the launch of
the campaign, with a notable uptick in social media interactions and online
sales.”
3. Concluding Sentence:
• The concluding sentence wraps up the paragraph by summarizing the main idea
and providing closure.
• It reinforces the significance of the main point and prepares the reader for the
transition to the next paragraph or topic.
• Example: “Overall, the marketing campaign has proven to be a resounding
success, driving positive outcomes across various key performance indicators.”
