Learning Objectives
At the end of this lesson, you must be able to:
1. explain oxidaon-reducon reacons and
2. explain coupled reacon processes and describe the role of ATP
in energy coupling and transfer.
OXIDATION-REDUCTION REACTIONS
An oxidaon-reducon or redox reacon is a type of chemical reacon that involves
a transfer of electrons between two chemical substances. In an oxidaon-
reducon reacon the oxidaon number of a molecule, atom, or ion changes by
gaining or losing an electron. Redox reacons are common and vital to some of
the basic funcons of life, including photosynthesis, respiraon, combuson, and
corrosion or rusng.
Oxidaon is the loss of electrons by a substance during a chemical reacon. The
substance which accepts these electrons is called the oxidizing agent. Reducon
