A cell has two main ways to couple ATP breakdown to an energy-
requiring reacon: ATP may be used either to energize a reactant, or to change
its shape – both of which are accomplished by transferring a phosphate group
to the reactant. For example, when building protein in a ribosome, an enzyme
transfers a phosphate group from ATP to each amino acid. This transfer acvates
the amino acid, causing it to bond with another amino acid.
ATP breakdown is coupled to various energy-requiring cellular reacons,
including acve transport and muscle contracon. Cellular respiraon provides the
energy for the producon of ATP.

                     Learning Tasks and A ssesment

Acvity 1. Differenate the pair of terms from each other.

              a. ADP and ATP

              b. Oxidaon and reducon

              c. Endergonic reacon and exergonic reacon

Acvity 2. Role-play how ADP and Pi form to make ATP. Be sure to label each

person who will perform the role of each molecule.
