Cartilage is a flexible connecve ssue that has no blood vessels or
nerves. In carlage, the cells lie in small, open cavies called lacunae, separated
by a semisolid yet flexible matrix. Carlage cells, or chondrocytes, are found in
the spinal disks, knees and other joints, ear, nose, and tracheal rings. They
provide flexible support, as well as funcon in shock absorpon. At birth, the
carlaginous nature of the human fetal skeleton makes it easier to pass through
the birth canal. Most of the carlage in humans is later replaced by bone.
Carlaginous fishes, such as sharks, possess skeletons that are made of carlage
            throughout their lives.
