Neurons are specialized cells that transmit nerve impulses. Every
neuron is composed of three parts: dendrites, a cell body, and an axon.
Dendrites are threadlike extensions that act as antennae, bringing nerve
impulses to the cell body from other cells or sensory systems. The cell body
contains the bulk of the cytoplasm and the nucleus of the neuron. An axon is a
single, long extension that carries nerve impulses away from the cell body.
The brain and spinal cord contain many neurons. The dendrites and cell
bodies located in the spinal cord make up the spinal nerves, while those in the
brain make up the cranial nerves. Nerves contain bundles of axons.
