Auditing Project Management Practices

            •  Project approval.

            •  Project resource allocation approvals.

            •  Prioritization.

            •  Scope change management.

            It is important to note that while the term “project management” is not explicitly included in any IIA
            Standards, within the internal audit activity,
            the individual audit engagement process is, in essence, also a project.

            Project Team

            Each project is assigned a team of individuals from various departments that work to achieve a
            common goal. As depicted in the chart below, there are several key roles associated with project
            management.

            Project Management Triangle

            Effective project teams have excellent team dynamics, and trust that all members are working

            toward achieving the same common goal. These teams frequently communicate concerns;

            seek clarification; and collectively strive to stay within scope, schedule, and budget. This

            is commonly referred to as the Project Management Triangle. Projects fail due to a misstep

            in one or more of these areas.

            Scope — The project requirements are approved, and the team delivers what was approved.
