Wait... What Makes A Book Beau?
Instead of wrapping the year with a Book Beau of the Month at
whom we can all gaze fondly, I thought I'd tell you what types of
traits I look for in a good book boyfriend or girlfriend. Then,
going forward, you'll be able to nominate beaus of your own -
and I invite it wholeheartedly! Here are the three most important
criteria I look at in a person (celeb or otherwise) when I'm
deciding whether or not I'd like to write a character "just like
them":
1. Are they good? Chaotic, Neutral, or Lawful - I like to be able
to see the good in a character I write, and I feel like my
readers enjoy the same. A person who is essentially good can
be redeemed from plenty - and if it's a situation you can't
imagine someone being redeemed from, I can almost
guarantee a good person wouldn't have done it in the first
place.
2. In what ways are they good? When looking to a real human
(because most heroes or heroines are inspired by a real
person, celeb or otherwise), I want to know how they
basically "put their money where their mouth is".
3. Am I attracted to them? Here's the thing - this one isn't just
about looks, though I definitely won't deny the "hot stuff"
factor when selecting a book beau. Always, always - if a
person's goodness shows and personality shines through, I'll
always find them attractive in one way or another. And if I'm
not attracted to the hero or heroine I'm writing, how can I
possibly make your hearts flutter if mine isn't while my
characters are flirting or just being their best selves in
general? Maybe it seems like the easy way to go, but there it
is.
That said - we'll start fresh in January with a brand new book
beau! If you'd like to nominate someone, shoot me an email with
your suggestions: sami@samantha-anne.com
