Her old friend from grade school days, Norma Decker Carlson, also
taught. Sometimes I would receive a call at 9 p.m., after Mutual ended
with Jean saying, Would you mind if Norma and I drove to Oakland to
attend a movie?
During the war, the Army installations under Ninth Service
Command Headquarters averaged about 40,000 employees. After the
war, the number of installations shrank and even the installations re-
maining open were reduced in size. We now had 10,000 employees. Our

I had two particularly interesting assignments. I went to Los Angeles

esting place.

prison located on the grounds of Camp Cooke near Lompoc, California.
This prison was making an honest attempt at providing rehabilitation
training for military prisoners who would someday be returning to ci-
vilian life. They had civilian trainers operating shops where men were
taught textile cutting and clothing manufacturing, woodworking, elec-
trical and machine shops, as well as automotive repair.
While inside the prison itself I was instructed to walk down the
center of the halls but they provided no guard for me. One day an alarm
ZHQW R൵ DQG , KXUULHG RXW EHFDXVH DOO SULVRQHUV ZHUH LQVWUXFWHG WR UHSRUW
immediately to their cells for a countdown. It later developed that one
prisoner had jumped into the back of a dump truck while his friends
piled debris and trash on top of him. The truck drove to a dump about a
mile away. The driver dumped his load and was driving out of the dump
when he thought he saw, in his rear-view mirror, a man arise out of the
trash. The driver drove back to the prison and reported the facts. The
countdown proved that one prisoner was missing. Military Police were
sent out in Jeeps to the surrounding crossroads. We later learned that the

wash line. He walked through the high hills into the next valley the next
day. The Military Police stopped all trucks and buses coming through on
