performance!
I had a terrible commute to the Presidio. I had to catch a bus at
20 minutes after 6 a.m. to get to San Francisco and then catch a streetcar,
which stopped frequently on route to the Presidio. My morning com-
mute was over 1½ hours long and had to be repeated at night. We could

our children and was tired when the blessed Saturday arrived. Money
was tight. It outrages my sense of fairness, but my Grade 12 status was
achieved in three steps over two years that I held that job. I earned a
top award for my performance while still not being paid the salary ap-
plicable to the grade of the job! These delays were due to stupid Civil
Service rules that arbitrarily set limits on the rate at which a person
could be promoted.

less loganberry vine on one wall. The vine sent out shoots that grew 20
feet. I had never seen such growth. The following spring it produced
loganberries in abundance. We loved those and the rhubarb plant I had
established. Jean made rhubarb upside down cake with whipped cream
that would make a stone cry out for more. I bought a slide for the kids
which ended in a sand pile we built. I also built a swing for the kids.
During our time in Berkeley, I served as a counselor in the El-
ders Quorum Presidency and later a President of the Sunday School.
The old Berkeley Ward had been split into two Wards, the membership
in each being rather restricted. It was a problem to have enough teach-
nd
ers for Sunday School. Our bishop in the Berkeley 2 Ward was Ward
