people moving out from New York. Nevertheless, Bob King assigned
us to a house that we were delighted with. It was House 1630. The kids
loved the fact that it was enclosed by a low wall in front, high hedges,
and had a big concrete patio with a tree about twenty feet high shading
it. It proved to be a very happy spot for the entire family.

We began work at 7:30 a.m. so the vehicles were all engaged
elsewhere when the kids walked to school in the morning. The children
were released at 11:30, so they walked home before the rest of us quit
work at noon. They returned to school at 12:30, whereas the employees
started work in the afternoon at 1:30. This arrangement was a wise one

The 1½-hour lunch period in Arabia was a result of Arab eating
habits. They returned to their bachelor quarters (provided by the compa-
ny) and either cooked for themselves or joined in small groups to have
someone cook for them. They always seemed to eat rice and they liked
having bits of lamb and gravy over the rice. After eating their lunch, they
then had to be transported back to the worksite in company buses that
were provided. I found this lunch schedule great! I came home to have
two sandwiches and a glass of milk at lunch and then had a 20-minute
nap in bed before returning to work after lunch. The commute from
home to work never exceeded 10 minutes. Because of the nap, I was as
fresh all afternoon as I had been in the morning. While work formally
ended at 5 p.m., I normally worked until about quarter to six. I would
then go by the canteen to pick up any newspapers or magazines that had

I began to get some of my projects adopted by corporate man-
