foundation walls of the last temple in Jerusalem, which is often referred
        to as the Jews’ “Wailing Wall.” It was clear to us, even then, that the
        control of this site would forever be a matter of fundamental contro-
        versy between Jews and Muslims.  Of all the historic sites in Jerusalem,
        only the Garden Tomb and the Garden of Gethsemane struck us as very
        likely being accurate locations.

               We went down to the Jordan River and Jericho and then to the
        Dead Sea. Unlike the Great Salt Lake, the Dead Sea smells bad due to
        the sulfur content in the water. Near Jericho, we visited an Arab refugee
        camp that was unforgettable. Several thousand refugees lived in tents
        provided by the United Nations with no water or sewer facilities. There
        was no electric power, no parks or playgrounds for children, no school,
        and no jobs. The women would walk about a mile to the nearest well
        LQ -HULFKR  ¿OO FOD\ MXJV ZLWK ZDWHU  DQG FDUU\ WKH ZDWHU EDFN RQ WKHLU
        heads. Food for these people was provided by the United Nations. The
        entire place was an object lesson of man’s inhumanity to man.

               At that time, Jerusalem had only the crudest kind of airport. It
        consisted of a runway, not much wider than a road, which ran down a
        slope and across the valley. A public road crossed the runway. When a
