ordinator-Wages and Salaries in his Division. I was delighted that my
salary increased about 23 percent within about three months due to the
combination of general increases and my promotion.

Three months after Victoria Kathleen’s birth, Jean again became
pregnant. This proved to be her easiest pregnancy. We thought this
might be because the hormones in her body had adjusted to the previous
pregnancy and had not changed much in the three ensuing months. The
wife of the director of industrial relations, who had had one son only,
suggested to Jean that she knew how to prevent frequent pregnancies.

In Dhahran, we continued our church services in our living room
every Friday morning. At that time, Christian church services could not

attended our services. No serviceman who came to church on Friday
morning ever failed to be invited to a dinner with our family at lunch-
time. Jean made sure that they were always made welcome and were
well fed in a home-cooked meal. The fellows were typically young and
they seemed to appreciate our hospitality.
Richard and Janet made new friends in Dhahran. We were a
bit dismayed in talking with Richard’s teacher to hear her comment,
“He’s smart enough, but he just tolerates class while waiting to play
sports.” Janet was always a serious student, and we never had to “push”
            her in this regard.

We were again eligible for a “Local Vacation.” Because Jean
was pregnant she was becoming somewhat tired. Several friends had
