Our local manager drove me around the countryside. We visited
a ranch – El Volcan – owned by a Nicaraguan family. It was being man-
aged by one of the sons in the family. He had graduated in engineering
from Louisiana State University and served a hitch in the U.S. Marines,
so he was thoroughly Americanized. His family had been losing money
on the ranch and, therefore, put him in charge. He told us that he hadn’t
known anything about farming, so he simply wrote to Louisiana State
University and secured books on each subject he was concerned with.
At the ranch, acres and acres of rice were growing vigorously; I couldn’t

and from the air I had been surprised at the size of the lake. The lake was
fresh water and I asked if they swam in the lake. The rancher told me
that there were sharks in the lake, so they didn’t swim there. I protested

there were sharks in the lake. I thought back to the stories of the Book
of Mormon where great changes were reported to have been made in the
earth, and it occurred to me that the lake might once have been connect-
ed to the sea nearby. With sharks in that section when the earth move-
ment occurred, they would have been trapped and required to adjust as
the lake changed from seawater to being fresh water. It would have been
a question as to whether the sharks could adapt, but I remembered read-
ing of a river in North or South Carolina where a dam had been built.

sea to mature (like salmon) had been trapped in the fresh water lake and
had adjusted and reproduced within fresh water.
The rancher also told me about their success in shooting wild
duck. The ducks were of the Rouen variety, which were a domesticated
