the brochure to the San Francisco headquarters of the various Chevron
overseas operations with a request that employees overseas at each site
consult with their wives and provide the raw data. We would then do
any editing necessary to assure that we had answers to all phases; we
would then print a loose-leaf brochure for each site. The responses were
slow in returning, but some gradually came back.
I also became the advocate for the foreign service employees in

department, the department on organization (which controlled compen-
sation) and similar groups. I had to tread a cautious line because these

Gradually, corporate departments and some of the subsidiary

ing people they sent overseas. I decided it was important for me to visit
more of the overseas sites in order to be better informed. My visits had
an additional advantage of reassuring foreign service employees that
someone cared about them at the corporate headquarters and was in-
formed and active in trying to help correct some of the problems that
they had found.
In the spring of 1969, I planned a trip around the world, which
would enable me to visit most of the overseas locations where we had
Chevron personnel assigned. About this time, Aunt Helen Honey La-
kin gave Jean $2,000. This was a very generous gift, which had never
occurred before. Jean wanted to go with me on the trip, so we utilized
the money for that purpose. The hotels where we stayed on the trip cost
the same whether one or two persons were involved, so the company
would pay for the hotels.
Honey and Stan were talking about a trip at the time. They
