Dhahran. On a Friday, the rest day, we went to Ras Tanura, our old
stomping ground. Jim Ehl and wife, Eleanor, had been our backdoor
neighbors in Ras Tanura. Jim had now been promoted to be District
Manager. He graciously invited us to a lovely dinner that he had set up
at the guesthouse. The guests were all fellows and wives whom we had
        known in Ras Tanura.

Larry Crampton very kindly took Jean’s folks around the Ar-

Crampton acted like what we had bought was a present for her. To avoid
embarrassment, I gave it to her.

put us up at the old BOAC Rest House. The place was now 25 years old.
Jean quite rightly insisted that we ought to have better quarters, where-
upon they took us downtown to a new hotel. The hotel was very nice

go to Jaipur. The place is very interesting because the old palaces were
built of pink sandstone, as are all the other buildings. Sometimes there
were intricately carved screens of pink sandstone. The Indian cities are
like an ant hive of human beings. It was amazing, however, to see how
lightly populated the countryside was. Farming appeared rather primi-
tive. I examined a well near a farmhouse and found that there was water
about 15 feet below the surface. It would appear that a good diesel pump
