out to the airport to meet me. Hong Kong has always been of great in-
terest to each of us. We stayed in the Hong Kong Hilton on the island,
as did Honey and Stan. Hong Kong is always a great place to shop. At
Roz Crampton’s request, I bought an opera-length strand of pearls for
her sister. It was interesting to be able to roll the pearls under a strong
light over a backing of black velvet. As a result, any pearl that appeared

At that time, ships arriving or departing from Hong Kong were
loaded from barges in the straits between Kowloon and Hong Kong
island. We had never seen so much activity in any harbor anywhere. At
night, Jean and I loved to take the Star Ferry that runs between Kowloon
and Hong Kong on a regular schedule. The trip takes only 10 minutes.
But at night, with the lights on the shore and on the mountains of Hong
Kong and the lights in Kowloon, the trip is one of the most romantic
        anywhere.

Taiwan. A couple who had formerly lived in Lafayette Ward were now
living in Taipei where he was supervising the design and construction
of a big dam. The wife had lived there long enough to be familiar with
the city and she very graciously showed them around. The highlight was
their visit to the national museum. Chiang Kai-Shek and followers had
taken all the wonderful antiquities from Chinese museums when they
        retreated to Taiwan.
