Singing opportunities
It is useful to be a singer if you are a choral composer. You
know what makes a good vocal line as well as having
opportunities to get your compositions performed. I
currently sing in three choirs: Wimbledon Choral (a large
choir singing the big choral works), Epsom Chamber Choir (a
smaller ensemble), St. Barnabus Choir (performs Compline
once a month). All three help me to tap into different
repertoire.
I also use my voice to create home studio versions of my
music. Together with my friend Sarah, a soprano, this allows
me, together with professional recordings, to produce high
quality recordings of all my music.
In 2023, I had a further opportunity to use my voice which
was to sing on two pieces scored for tenor and piano written
by fellow composer, Andrew Harrod. He takes as his text the
th
famous 17 century poet, Andrew Marvell. Both these pieces
were professionally recorded. I include a picture of the
recording team - myself, Andrew (middle) and the recording
engineer, Chris. Below, there is a video thumbnail providing a
link to ‘The Fair Singer’, one of the songs we recorded.
