I. ALTERNATIVE MEDICAL SYSTEM
2. Acupressure
Definition: Acupressure often called
"acupuncture without needles"(from
"acupuncture" and "pressure") is a traditional
Chinese medicine based on the same ideas as
acupuncture. Acupressure involves placing
physical pressure by hand, elbow, or with the aid
of various devices on different acupuncture
points on the surface of the body.
It‘s also known as Shiatsu, it is defined as an ancient healing art using the fingers and
other parts of the body to skillfully press key points, which stimulate the body's natural
self-curative abilities .
N B: Acupuncture and acupressure use the same pressure points and meridians, but
acupuncture employs needles, while acupressure uses gentle to firm pressure and
integrates bodywork therapies, therapeutic touch, somatic work, healing imagery, energy
psychology, and massage therapy techniques.
Goal of Acupressure:
The goal of acupressure or other types of Asian bodywork is to restore health and
balance to the body's channels of energy and to regulate opposing forces of yin (negative
energy) and yang (positive energy). Some proponents claim acupressure not only treats
the energy fields and body but also the mind, emotions, and spirit. Some even believe
that therapists can transmit the vital energy (external qi) to another person.
