Contraindications of heat Applications:
Any acute inflammation such as arthritis, tendonitis, sprains or strains.
Diabetic patient.
Sauna baths should be avoided by people with heart conditions, lung disease or by
pregnant women, active tuberculosis and sexually transmitted diseases.
Warm temperatures can lead to dehydration or low blood sodium levels, and
hydration and electrolyte intake should be maintained
Contraindications of Cold Applications:
Previous frostbite or other hypersensitivity to cold such as Reynaud's disease or
Lupus
Poor kidney function
Hypothyroidism - causes further reduction in basal metabolic rate
Advanced Cardiovascular disease because of increase in systolic blood pressure
Cold baths should not be given to young children or the elderly.
Cold foot baths are used with caution for people with bladder or rectal irritation.
People suffering from sciatica, pelvic inflammation or rheumatism in the toes or
ankles should avoid cold foot baths.
Nursing considerations with Hydrotherapy:
Water temperature should be carefully monitored, particularly for patients with
temperature-sensitivity disorders, such as neuropathy.
People with implanted medical devices such as pacemakers, or liver infusion
pumps should avoid high temperatures or therapies that involve electrical
currents.
Avoid Contact with contaminants or additives in water (such as essential oils or
chlorine). It can irritate the skin.
