5. TASIK CHINI RESORT AND THE NATIONAL SERVICE CAMP
Sewage problem
• It is interesting to note that the improper sewage disposal was not caused by the
orang asli settlements, but by a local tourism resort and a national service camp by
the lakeside (Nicholas and Baer, 2007).
• The lake is contaminated with faecal coliform bacteria exceeding the standard count
permitted by the Malaysian Department of Environment (Basri, Othman and Wahid,
2015). This pollution is due to a crude sewage system that passes sewage from
settled areas directly into the lake.
• The effects of this bacterial pollution, such as itchiness and diarrhoea, are suffered
by those who used the lake water (Rajah and Hoong, 2004).
Land clearance to build resort and camp
• Habitat loss through land clearing is a leading threatening process of terrestrial
biodiversity.
• The need urban forest levels to stabilise the amount of carbon monoxide and other
greenhouse gases in the atmosphere
Boats cause lake/river bank erosion
• Boating is among the most popular activities in Tasik Chini to take tourists enjoy the
beauty of lotus in Tasik Chini. However, boat waves can be an important driver of
lake/river bank erosion and sedimentation in lake.
