 Habits
We are all a collection of habits. I know people sometimes dislike the notion that we are robotic and programmed by habits but this is not what I am trying to say. We behave in patterns which develop over time. This is what happens when people partner with one another. We repeat patterns that have to do with maintaining the partnership, the environment the partnership occurs in, and the interests of the partnership (we eat together, we like to go skiing, we watch certain movies, etc.) I am going to try to teach you to become aware of your relationship habits and patterns, to be aware of what habits and patterns cause you to have the same disagreement or disappointment over and over again. And which patterns and habits fortify and strengthen that mutually transformative partnership.
The hirst set of habits that we are going to talk about is:
What partners do to disappoint one another; and after they disappoint one another.
I will be referring to this aspect of relationship building as “managing disappointment.”
The second set of habits are:
What we do “in between” disappointments.
