and the other partner desires more closeness, this will give rise to disappointment. If both people are pulling away work has to be done to put the relationship back together or it will fail. Relationships that are not maintained will either become boring or conhlicted.
There are couples who love each other so much that they are always deepening their relationship because that is what they do naturally. If you have one of those relationships hold on to it for dear life. If your relationship seeks that wonderful state, keep working and keep seeking it.
Another One of My Stories
I gave a talk to a fairly large number of couples who signed on with me to a seminar on how to become an “happy old couple.” The seminar was a shorter version of what you are reading in this program — how to stay in a loving partnership, manage disappointment and grow your love over time. The women all listened intensely. The men (mostly but not all) squirmed uncomfortably in their seats. I fully realize that I am giving men a hard time. Men and women can come at relationships from different points of view — not all men, not all women.
It seemed the people who were squirming were saying,
“You mean I gotta do stuff?”
