Public Schools (1945 - 57)
Helen's elementary school years began in 1945 at Rittenhouse Public School. This school 21
was across the Queen Elizabeth Way from the farm. The highway was not as busy as it is
today and she recalled walking across the highway (looking both ways) with her bicycle.
There was an underpass, but Helen reported that it was too "scary" for her to use.
The school (torn down to allow for QEW expansion) was adjacent to the Vineland
Experimental Farm – which at the time was associated with the Ontario Agricultural College
(now the University of Guelph). Many of Helen's close friends, such as Helen Truscott –
were children of faculty there. There were more than one grade per class (the term is
“Junior Room” in the photos). Helen skipped one grade during these years and graduated
from Grade 8 in 1952. She took part in sports with baseball being her favorite, playing for
Vineland United in the Niagara Presbytery League.
