KINGSTON, ONTARIO - SHARON AND MICHAEL ARRIVE.
William St., John St, Swamp House. 1963 - 1968.
On Tuesday, November 12th, 1963 Helen delivered Sharon Elizabeth Card, the first
of her three children. Her family physician, Dr. Merrill Trotter, attended. Family lore has it
that Bob was busy in the laboratory and didn’t attend until later. Bob not fully clear about
this story as he was a “Clinical Clerk” at the time and should have been in the hospital. In
any event, fathers weren’t allowed in the case room in those days. While not related it was
only 10 days later that John Kennedy was assassinated.
It was clear that the William Street apartment was too small to include a child so Bob and
Helen rented a larger apartment at 23 John Street, Kingston. Helen returned to teaching
and Aunt Charlene Truscott became Sharon’s baby sitter. The Bonner family (Roger, Marg
and Angela) were neighbors and close friends as was Wilma Anderson. They’ve kept in
touch for many years. Marg recalls: “…Helen knit matching coats, sweaters and berets for
Angela and Sharon…they were so sweet”. Wilma recalls: “…Helen knit me a pair of socks
for Andrew…they kept his legs nice and warm”.
In May 1964 Bob graduated from Queen’s University Medical School with his MD. Many
family members and friends attended. Bob started his postgraduate training as a Junior
Rotating Intern at Kingston General Hospital. On call in those days was rather stressful –
basically every other day and night.
