Freelton/Burlington, ON (1994)
Helen and Bob spent 6 months there in 1994 with Bob’s administrative leave at McMaster.
For 2 of those months they lived on an acreage east of Freelton (11th Concession Road
East) with ponds and the Bronte Creek providing lots of wildlife. The other months were in
an apartment building in downtown Burlington. Helen would walk to Burlington Market
where her sister Bernice had a booth selling fruit from their farm.
Ottawa, ON (2003-04)
Bob spent a year working with the Medical Council of Canada. While much of this was
spent in Saskatoon for 3 of the months Helen and Bob lived in an apartment hotel in the
middle of downtown Ottawa. This was a great spot for Helen to live and she quickly began
to explore the area which included a number of her favorite spots. The “Glebe Emporium”
and “Mags and Fags” come to mind (neither are still there). An interesting event occurred at
4:10 pm on Thurs Aug 14th, 2003. Bob and Helen were at the National Arts Center watching
“Miss Saigon” when everything went dark. Initially there was no concern, they assumed it
was part of the show, until a voice from the dark stage yelled “don’t panic!” This was the
beginning of the big northeastern power outage which lasted for the next two days. Bob, of
course, panicked. Helen, in her usual organized fashion, calmly took charge, getting him
and others under control, finding an exit out to Elgin St. Two days of no power meant no
elevators or air conditioning in their high rise apartment! It was very hot and humid that
week.
Note: this is being written in early Feb 2022 and living in downtown Ottawa wouldn’t have
been as nice at the current time!
