Applying to Medical Schools
hen it came time to apply, I chose the three main medical schools in Ontario: Western, Toronto, and Queen’s. The
Wprocess wasn’t as competitive or stressful as it is today, and I’m certain I was accepted to all three. But the real
decision was where to go. My close high school friend, Dave Lamont, chose Western, but I hadn’t toured any of the
schools. That summer of 1957, while at the cottage, my dad suggested we visit Queen’s. It seemed a fitting choice since
both my parents and even my grandfather had attended Queen’s. The school had a deep family connection, and at the time,
it was small, with just 2,000 students.
