The Medical Career Path

t the time, medicine was a direct entry field—you could start medical school right after high school. Looking back,
Athat system had its flaws, and even today, some institutions, like Queen’s, are piloting programs to revisit direct entry,
But generally, a solid undergraduate education first is better in my opinion. For me, medicine seemed a natural choice.
My father was a doctor, and while I don’t recall him pressuring me into the field, his influence was undoubtedly there. I
also knew family doctors like Dr. Davies in Sydenham, Ontario, who we visited from our cottage. He was a kind, friendly
man and an excellent example of what a good family doctor could be. Interestingly, another path was suggested to me—
mathematics. My teacher, Mr. Moles, thought I was bright in math and encouraged me to pursue it. But I couldn’t picture
myself following that route. Medicine felt more aligned with my aspirations and interests.
