Settling in Hamilton

n mid-1948, we finally settled in Hamilton, beginning a more stable chapter of our lives. This became the Card family
Ihome for over 50 years. I attended George L. Armstrong School (grades five to eight) and later Central Secondary
School (grades nine to thirteen), navigating Hamilton’s unique geography between downtown and the “mountain.”
Getting to high school involved trolley buses, a novelty at the time, and lunch breaks often meant watching steam trains
with my friend Stephen Omielanowicz. These moments helped continue my lifelong fascination with transportation. I
received my first Lionel train in the late 1940s and took out a subscription to Model Railroader in 1952 which continued
for many years. I still have most of those issues in my collection in 2025.
