Life at Leonard Hall
n my second year, I moved into Leonard Hall, a new residence at Queen’s. I had a single room, which felt like a small
Iluxury. As before there was lots of camaraderie with the students in residence, who were from all schools on cam-
pus. Meals at Leonard Hall were less than stellar—the pork hocks were particularly terrible. But there were upsides too,
like the time I joined a research project involving a liquid diet called “CRUD.” For two months, we lived entirely on this
milkshake-like substance, which saved us money and created a sense of camaraderie. I even developed a lifelong habit of
taking my coffee with sugar, since cream wasn’t allowed. We received a refund on our meal expenses at residence, one of
the perks. The research project was designed to see the effects of various fats on cholesterol levels. The professor of physi-
ology, Dr. “Butter Jim” Beveridge was the director of the project..
