Influences and Friendships
he professors at Queen’s left lasting impressions. Dr. Basmajian stood out for his humanistic
Tapproach to anatomy, but others, like our genetics professor, were memorable for their evolving
knowledge. I still remember the excitement of learning the truth about chromosomes. When I had been
in first year our genetics professor had taught us there were 48. In second year, this was corrected to
46. Friendships blossomed during those years. I became close with classmates like Tom Disney, who
remained a lifelong friend. Ernie McCrank and his wife, Jan, remained very close. Ernie passed away
in 2019. Our class was small, only 48 students, with 46 who received their MD, and we shared many
milestones together. Decades later, at our 60th reunion in 2024, we laughed about our shared memories,
even as we mourned the classmates who couldn’t be there. Sixteen of my classmates were able to attend.
We were all a bit slower, but the personalities were the same.
