                2.4.2 The autonomic nervous system

We also have another nervous system that we cannot consciously control - the

                autonomic nervous system.

It controls internal organs, blood vessels, blood pressure, heart rate, body

                temperature, sweating, and more.

2.4.2.1 Sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems

The autonomic nervous system consists of two subsystems that keep each

other in balance: Sympathetic system and Parasympathetic system.

Below is a diagram showing their reactions.

2.4.3 Diseases of the nervous system

The nervous system can be affected by diseases and injuries.

The brain may be damaged by: stroke or brain hemorrhage, head trauma,

                toxins, infections, aging, tumors.

We are born with a fixed number of nerve cells. Once a nerve cell is destroyed,

it cannot be replaced. Other cells can only partially take over their functions.
