Air Law

You can indicate an emergency in several ways:

                  - Send a signal consisting of the group SOS either by radiotelephone or other

                      signaling means.

                  - Send a signal consisting of the word MAYDAY via radio (preferably

                      pronounced three times).

                  - Launch rockets or bombs that emit red light at short intervals.

                  - Send a parachute flare that shows red light.

                  - Set the transponder to 7700 (unless you are flying under controlled flight

                      with an assigned transponder code).

                1.6.2.1 Illegal activity (hijacking, etc.)

The aircraft commander should, as far as possible, set the transponder to 7500

                mode A.

                1.6.2.2 Alert phases

The rules for procedures in connection with suspected observed emergency

situations are described in BL 7-4 section 16.

1.6.2.3 Requirements for the aircraft commander

When an aircraft commander has reasonable suspicion that another aircraft is

in an emergency, they must immediately notify the air traffic control unit within

                the area.

                1.6.2.4 Search and rescue

Below are definitions of terms relating to the search and rescue of aircraft and

                air crews.
