Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC): A center responsible for ensuring the
effective organization of air rescue services within a specified area.
Search and Rescue (SAR): The service, any measure or use of a vehicle for
search and rescue provided to aircraft in distress and to those in distress from
aircraft.
This service, measure, or vehicle need not be designated or equipped for this
purpose but can be used effectively in connection with search and rescue
operations for distressed aircraft.
Pilot-in-Command: The person responsible for the operation and safety of the
aircraft during flight.
Distress: A situation where an aircraft or vessel is threatened by serious and
imminent danger and requires immediate assistance.

1.6.3 Procedures in case of accident, search and rescue
1.6.3.1 Observation of an accident
When an aircraft commander observes that another aircraft or a surface vessel
is in distress, the commander, unless unable to do so or unless circumstances
deem it unreasonable or unnecessary, must:
A. Keep the distressed vehicle in sight until the aircraft commander’s
presence is no longer required or until they are no longer able to
remain near the distressed vehicle.
B. Take actions to help determine the position of the aircraft commander
if it is not known with certainty.
C. Provide as much of the following information as possible to the Rescue
Coordination Centre or the air traffic service:
- Type of distressed craft.
