in ICAO Doc 9731-AN/958.
Signal to ships
If it becomes necessary to instruct a ship to assist, the following maneuvers can
be performed in the order mentioned:
1. Fly around the ship at least once.
2. Fly at low altitude in front of the ship, across its
course, simultaneously:
a) Open and close the throttle,
or
b) Change the propeller setting.
3. Fly in the direction the ship should be directed.
If you want to inform that assistance is no longer required, you should:
4. Fly at low altitude close behind the ship, across its
wake, while:
a) Opening and closing the throttle,
or
b) Changing the propeller setting.
