Human Performance

                2.3.5.4 Blood donation

Pilots should not donate blood immediately before a flight, as this can affect

physical performance. Blood donation causes a temporary fluid loss, which may

lead to dizziness, fatigue, or dehydration - dangerous conditions during flight.

It is generally recommended that pilots wait 24 - 48 hours after donating blood

before flying. In some cases, a longer wait may be necessary.

2.3.5.5 Other causes of oxygen deficiency

                  - Carbon monoxide – from faulty exhaust systems or cabin heaters. Carbon

monoxide binds to blood cells more easily than oxygen, causing poisoning

                      without noticeable signs.

                  - Poor circulation – due to poor fitness or health conditions.

                  - Lung tissue damage – caused by alcohol, halogenated hydrocarbons from

chlorine-based fire extinguishers. Only use carbon dioxide or Halon

extinguishers if water or conventional methods fail to put out a fire.
