FOOL, DID YOU NOT KNOW?
Paula Vega Vondenstein Mthought to where they are going to spend eternity. They focus strictly on the here and
any people live their lives as if they are going to live forever and don’t give much
now and what brings them pleasure, prestige, money, and power. Unfortunately for many,
their focus and plans do not include the things of God. As the lyricist and producer for Bible
Belt Blues, I was eager to write a lyric so jolting and with such a sense of urgency that it
Bible Belt Blues could cause someone to think twice about the direction their life is headed.
For inspiration, I dove deep into scripture and found “The Parable of the Rich Fool” (Luke
12:13-21). I remembered a sermon that my pastor in Houston, Dr. Duane Brooks, delivered
on this parable saying that it was the only time in the entire Bible that God ever addressed
someone as a “Fool.” That really caught my attention! We so often hear about a God of Love,
but we also serve a God of Justice, and there are consequences for living our lives without
God.
My husband, Harold, and I started creating music together as a couple in September of 2018
after I convinced him to let me write the lyrics first. The lyrics just started flowing; bold,
biblically sound lyrics like I had never heard before on Christian radio or in churches these
days: repentance songs, salvation songs, and songs for church revivals. “Fool, Did You Not
Know?” was one of my very first lyrics I wrote. We recorded it for our first album, “I’m Not
Ashamed to Be a Christian” but as the producer, I decided to set it aside to redo later for
our 2nd album, “My God, My God.” We added my husband’s weeping harmonica and wove
it throughout the song which sets the tonality for lyrics as jolting as these. The music shifts
gears in such an unexpected way when God speaks. The end result was just perfect and it
was finally ready for release with our second album on June 1st of 2019.
During 2019, Harold and I created, recorded, mixed, mastered, and produced two Christian
albums in our own home recording studio. And then the unthinkable happened last
September of 2019. We actually won the prestigious Josie Music Award for Gospel /
Christian Duo after more than 23,000 nominations were submitted across all genres from
around the globe. God has continued to open up doors for our Bible Belt Blues music
ministry with extensive media coverage (including TV interviews), eleven song reviews in
“Indie Spoonful” and “Please Pass the Indie” International music blogs, as well as several
articles in Write Away Magazine for Lyricists.
Amazingly, eighteen of our original songs have already received radio airplay on numerous
Indie radio stations, a testament to our commitment of having each song be a distinctive
work of art. With a style so fresh and lyrics so bold, Harold and I find ourselves in a unique
position with a genre that is distinctly our own, which falls under the larger genre of Gospel
Blues. With our Bible Belt Blues music ministry, we are ready to evangelize the world one
song at a time. We continue to seek opportunities where we can broaden our radio audience
to include larger platforms. Bible Belt Blues is available for concerts at churches, colleges,
and theatres.
