Austyn Cuneo
Austyn:
Words can hardly express how proud we are of you. Starting way back in early elementary school, we
always knew that field hockey was a great fit for you. And now, as you have finished your college
career, there is so much to look back upon. Over the years, we have come to recognize that a career
that was so public was not easy at times for you, but you continued to excel and enjoyed success at
every level. Then there were the injuries. Your ability to overcome so many physical obstacles and
keep coming back again and again is admirable. You could have walked away several times due to
injury but your love for the game kept you working hard and coming back.
We are also very proud of the way that you have adopted the role of role model for so many young
women in the sport. It was unexpected at first, but so many young players gravitated to you and you
have been more than gracious to help them in any way you can in the name of the sport. Taking
time to mentor and coach young players has turned out to be one of your greatest strengths and one
of which we are very proud.
Life is full of ups and downs, as you know. Your ability to move beyond transferring schools was difficult
for you. It took a lot of inner strength for you to move past that period. We are so glad that you were
willing to step up and recognize what you needed to do to move forward in your life.
So now that you are moving on to the next chapter in your life, we are fully supportive of the choices
you are making to fulfill a life beyond the playing field. Continuing to coach and give back to the field
hockey community makes us proud that even though you no longer will be playing, you are
continuing to lift up younger women and help them achieve their goals. They call this a farewell letter.
We don’t see it that way. We see this as an opportunity to lift you up into the next phase of your life
and help you be as successful at the next phase as you have been at every phase prior.
Love,
Mom, Dad and Evan
