Warriors Rout Staples, Lock up Top seed for

            FCIACs

            By J.B. Cozens

The Wilton High field hockey team
            traveled to Westport on Monday
night looking to wrap up the top seed
for the upcoming FCIAC playoffs. It
did that and a whole lot more.

Against a Staples team that entered
the game in fourth place in the
            conference standings, the Warriors
turned in a peak performance in an
            impressive 6-0 win.

            The Warriors (13-1-1 overall, 11-0-1
in the FCIAC) needed only 58
seconds to open the scoring, after a
rocket of a hit by Jillian Mahon from
the right sideline was stopped in
            front by Katherine Campbell, and
then wound up being shot into the Bridget Ward (left) battles a Staples player for the ball during the Wilton Hight
cage by Delaney Chase. field hockey teams win over the Wreckers on Monday night in Westport. J.B.

Chase scored again with 16 minutes
left in the first half, and Kristen Godin blasted in a shot on a penalty corner with nine minutes left in the
            half, making it 3-0.

In the second half, Wilton got goals by Meg Cunningham, Godin and Bridget Ward to close out the
            scoring.

The Wreckers fought hard to the end and had several changes to change the momentum of the game in
both halves, only to be thwarted by the tremendous play of Wilton goalie Amanda Hendry. For the
night, Chase had two goals and one assist and Godin also scored twice. Cunningham had a goal and two
assists, and Ward had one goal. Delaney Baxendale and Campbell each had an assist.

With the FCIAC quarterfinals looming on Saturday, Monday’s performance was a good way to head
            into the post season.

“They played tremendously tonight. I think they were tested, and they played like a team finally. In
pressure situations, offensive situations, defensive situations, midfield situations. This is probably one of
the best games we’ve had this season and it’s a great game to have heading into the post season,” said
            head coach Deirdre Hynes.
