Wilton has always got tremendous play in the center field from Cunningham, middies Baxendale and
Godin, and defenders Caroline Taverna and Meredith Rappaport, while Ward, Mahon and defender Jess
Hendry were superb up and down the right side. Susie Clasby, Chase and Campbell all played hard up
front and in blocking up the
midfield.
And as usual, it was a total team
effort. For the night, Wilton had
a 8-3 edge in penalty corners,
and 11-7 edge in shots at goal,
Jodie Baris had three saves in
goal for the Wreckers.
“I just think we didn’t play as a
team and Wilton was passing
right around us. They’re
excellent. They flow. They’re a
great team,” said Staples coach
Ashley Delvecchio. “they have
an amazing goalie, and they
possess the ball. They’re able to
hold onto it and pass it around
to each other and cause those corners”.
Staples, which dropped to 8-3-0-14 in FCIAC play with the loss, kept fighting to the end – with Hendry
making a spectacular leg save with about a minute left to preserve her 11th shutout of the season.
Baxendale also made a great stop near the goal in the final minutes to deny a goal.
“Staples never let down. I’ve never seen a team play hard for the whole 60 minutes like that, no matter
what the score was, and I give them tons of credit for that,” said Hynes. “Amanda came up with some
big saves, which kept our momentum. Easily, at one time it could have been 3-1 or 3-2.”
Notes: Godin scored three goals to lead the Wilton to a 6-0 win at Stamford last Thursday. Baxendale,
Cunningham, and Mahon also scored goals for the Warriors. Cunningham and Mahon each had assists.
