What It Means to Be “Data‐driven” 47
Finally, give decision‐makers reason to trust you. Be as transparent as you can. Be open
about the strengths and weaknesses in your analyses. Don’t be shy when stating your recom-
mendations. And admit it when you are wrong.
No doubt, this is hard work. But, assuming you see the value of data‐driven decision‐mak-
ing, we ask this: “If you don’t do these things, who will?” It is easy enough to bewail company
politics. And incumbent on you to do something about it.
Thus, to conclude, in the near term, the real work of data scientists and CAOs involves
understanding the strengths and weaknesses of decision‐makers and taking them into account.
In the longer term, the real work involves helping the individual decision‐makers and the
entire organization to become more data‐driven.
