Steps for Putting on and Taking off Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Putting On PPE
Put on PPE outside of the patient room
1. Perform hand hygiene
2. Put on gown
• Tie neck and waist ties securely
3. Put on surgical mask/fit tested N95 respirator
• Place mask over nose and under chin
• Secure ties, loops or straps
• Mould metal piece to your nose bridge
• Perform a seal-check
4. Put on eye protection
• Put on eye protection and adjust fit
• Face shield must fit over brow and over the N95 respirator (if
applicable)
5. Put on gloves
• Put on gloves, taking care not to tear or puncture gloves
• The gloves should fit over the cuff of the gown
Taking off PPE
Complete Steps 1 through 5 within the patient room and steps 6 through 8 outside
of the patient room or in the ante-room.
1. Remove gloves:
• Grasp the 1st glove by pinching the inner wrist area below the cuff
• Pull halfway down creating a cuff over the entire thumb
• Using the clean area, grasp the 2nd glove and remove completely
• Using the clean hand remove the remaining glove by pulling from the
cuff area
2. Perform hand hygiene
3. Untie waist tie
4. Remove gown:
• Remove gown in a manner that prevents contamination of clothing or
skin
• Undo the neck ties, pull the outer contaminated side of the gown
forward and turn inward, roll the gown off the arms and into a bundle
• Discard immediately in a manner that prevents air disturbance
5. Perform hand hygiene
6. Exit patient environment
7. Remove eye protection
• Remove by pulling ties straight up and forward. Discard into waste
8. Remove surgical mask/N95 respirator
• Remove by touching ties, ear loops or straps only
• Grasp straps, pull straight up and forward off the head bending
forward to allow the mask to fall from the face
• Discard immediately into waste
9. Perform hand hygiene
