8. UNDERSTAND: CHANGE
IS THE ONLY CONSTANT
We all hope that things will remain constant, that change won’t occur. But how realistic is this? Truly, everything changes. Our moods, our bodies, our relationships. Even though change is often for the better, we sometimes find ourselves holding tightly onto something. When we cling to the idea that change won’t occur, we set ourselves up for disappointment. We get caught up in a fantasy world of how we think things should be, and we may find ourselves expending a lot of mental energy fighting against reality. When we accept what actually is, we can utilize the energy previously used to fight against reality and put it toward working with what actually is going on. We not only gain a more flexible stance but we often find that things shift from being overwhelming to being workable.
Be present: this week, notice where you’re fighting against the reality of your circumstances. Then, remind yourself that change is an inevitable part of life. See if you can loosen the reins, even a little bit.
