Advanced Nitrification
Carbonaceous and Nitrogenous Co-Existence
Some wastewater facilities, provide two stage Carbonaceous and Nitrogenous
treatment.
Each stage is tailored to the specific pH, DO, Contact Time, F:M and SRT. Stage 1
would contain Heterotrophs (Carbonaceous removal) and Stage 2 would contain
Autotrophs.
Many treatments plants with extended aeration and longer contact times
comingle both Heterotrophs and Autotrophs within the same mixed liquor,
maintaining a slightly higher pH (6.7 to 7.5) DO (3 to 5 mg/L) higher SRT (6 to
20 days) and lower F:M (less than 0.2).
The Nitrification process requires higher populations of organisms, resulting in
lower F:M (Food to Mass – more working Mass).
Note - Even simple lagoons can achieve nitrification… given enough detention
time.
